Car Service FAQs

You've invested your hard-earned money in your new Chevrolet, so you need to protect your investment. That means taking care of it. Your car has a schedule of services the factory sets to help maintain it. Performing these and other routine maintenance tasks will help keep your Chevrolet running at its peak for a long time.

Unfortunately, many drivers don't fully understand the importance of servicing their cars. To help, we asked our service technicians to explain why regular maintenance is necessary and answer some of the most common questions regarding vehicle service.

Routine Maintenance

You can consider any services falling under routine maintenance to be those necessary to keep your car running efficiently and effectively. These services include the following:

Oil Changes

Most car owners understand the need for oil changes. Your engine's oil helps keep its many moving parts lubricated and protected against friction and the high heat of combustion. Unfortunately, over time, your engine oil's viscosity breaks down, which affects its ability to lubricate and protect. Oil also collects contaminants and particulates resulting from the combustion process. Therefore, changing your engine oil from time to time is necessary.

The old-school rule was to change your oil every 3,000 miles. However, modern Chevrolet vehicles can run much longer between oil changes due to improved engine and oil technology. Depending on your vehicle's make and model, you could drive between 5,000-10,000 miles before needing a change. Your owners manual will have the proper interval.

Tire Rotations

Your tires wear over time due to the friction created by contact with the road. However, tires wear differently between axles due to different loads and operating conditions. You can combat this and prolong your tires' life by rotating them to help spread out that uneven wear. We recommend you rotate your tires every 10,000 miles or every other oil change.

Brake Service

Your brake system is responsible for bringing your car to a controlled stop in routine and emergency situations. However, the brake pads wear out over time. Replacing your brake pads helps improve safety and prevents more costly damage to discs and rotors. You should inspect your brake pads and other components every 10,000 to 15,000 miles or once a year. At Huffines Chevrolet Lewisville, we inspect your brake pads as a courtesy whenever we change your oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our service center reviewed some of the most common questions regarding service to help you understand its importance and how to proceed.

How Often Should I Have My Car Serviced?

This depends on the make, model, and service in question. We also recommend you consult the service schedule in your owners manual. If you've misplaced yours, our service center can provide this information.

Can I Bring My Chevy to Any Repair Shop?

Technically, yes. However, not all mechanics are created equal, and training and experience make a big difference. At Huffines Chevrolet Lewisville, we provide ongoing factory training to our technicians so they remain updated on the latest parts and repair practices.

Your corner garage mechanic doesn't have access to the same training, and it will also work on all vehicle brands. So while it will probably work on Chevrolet vehicles occasionally, that hardly makes it an expert.

We recommend you bring your Chevrolet to our service center for all your maintenance and repair needs. Who better to diagnose and repair your Chevrolet than a technician with the latest training and experience working on your vehicle?

What Kind of Parts Will You Use To Service and Repair My Car?

This is an essential question with significant consequences. At Huffines Chevrolet Lewisville, we only use Genuine Chevrolet original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for maintenance and repairs. You might find other garages that recommend aftermarket parts to save you a few dollars. However, when you understand the difference between OEM and aftermarket parts, you'll learn why we use OEM parts.

You can consider Chevrolet OEM parts the same parts used when Chevy first built your car. Likely, these OEM parts were made by the same manufacturer. But more importantly, OEM parts are made to the standards Chevy set forth when designing your vehicle. That means they're constructed of the same materials, built to the exact dimensions, and operate at the precise specifications of Chevrolet engineers.

Aftermarket parts manufacturers aren't held to the same standards as OEM parts manufacturers. Aftermarket parts only have to fit and work. This lower standard means aftermarket parts makers generally use lower-quality materials.

In addition, they build some parts to fit several makes and models, which leads to a poor fit. And while these parts may work, they don't always result in the same performance. As a result, your car may operate less efficiently or effectively. They're also more susceptible to failure and breakage because they were made from lesser-quality materials.

So if the part doesn't fit right, performs poorly, and fails sooner, have you really saved money? Not if you replace the part much sooner than if you used an original equipment manufacturer part.

Using only Genuine Chevrolet OEM parts and accessories for all our services guarantee your car will run the way Chevy intended the day it first rolled off the assembly line. You can rely on an OEM part's fit, finish, and dependability.
